Guitar String for archtop acoustics with a pickup?
what are good strings for an acoustic archtop with a pick up to be played thru an amp. To get that warm Jazz sound
Try D'Addario Chrome flatwounds, or LaBella Nylon Tape flatwounds. The Chromes have a pretty dull sound, which is actually nice for most jazz archtops. I think Bruce Forman said on his site that he uses them. I use the LaBellas on my jazz archtop. They have a different sound and a lighter feel than the D'Addarios... not for everyone, but I like it.
The LaBellas can be hard to find. I buy them at www.juststrings.com site. They have a huge selection of EVERY kind of string (i.e. acoustic, electric, banjo, mando, you name it), good prices, fast service (the standard USPS shipping usually gets my order to me in 2-3 days, awesome), and they're helpful if you phone. Warning: the LaBella set I mentioned is pricey, even from them.
one last thing: archtops do not respond like solidbody guitars. The amp settings and room acoustics that sound great for your Les Paul could sound dreadful for a jazz box. Be prepared to take your time experimenting with strings, guitar settings, amp settings, and even putting up curtains or other sound-dampening devices in order to get that "perfect" warm-as-buttah sound.
